The Beginning No One Saw Coming
Raul’s community was never meant to exist.
Many years ago, strong floods forced families to leave their homes. They moved to higher ground and started over. More came from that hard season than new roads and houses. A new neighbourhood grew, built by people who knew how to begin again.
Raul was standing on one of those streets when visitors came to his door.
The team was from a local church. Their purpose was simple, to serve families and share the message of Jesus. Raul, 43, met them at the doorway after a long day of work. Dust covered his rubber boots, and his worn red cap sat low on his head, as though he hadn’t yet slowed down from the day's work. They asked if they could share the message of the gospel of Jesus with Raul and his family.
As they spoke, Raul shared something that had stayed with him for many years. He said that even though his family grew up Catholic, they did not really understand who Jesus is.
The team opened the Esperanza (Hope) magazine—a Scripture magazine given out by ShareWord Global during outreach events. Using its pages, they explained the gospel to Raul and his family in a simple way. They talked about Jesus, what He taught, and how He showed His love by dying on the cross and His free gift of new life.
They spoke with kindness, explaining that Jesus is a faithful friend who stays with us through good times and bad. Raul and his family listened closely, like they were thinking about every word. As they began to understand, something changed in their hearts. And by the end of the conversation, Raul and his whole family chose to invite Jesus into their lives.
Today, Raul and his family go to the same local church—the one whose members first visited his home on that quiet street filled with old memories. He’s easy to find in the crowd with his same cap and dusty boots, but now he carries a new joy. He sings songs of praise beside the people who first shared the Good News with his family.
In a city known for fresh starts, Raul is beginning his own—happily learning to walk with the Lord one step at a time.
