What Will You Discover?

As a child, you are always searching—asking why, peering closely, looking for answers to everything around you. With wide eyes and endless curiosity, you move through the world full of wonder. And sometimes, what you discover is more powerful than you ever imagined.

Six-year-old Lia arrived at Liceo Naval Lieutenant Commander Manuel Clavero school in Lima, Peru—her hair tied in a lovely yellow and blue bow. Little did she know that the unspoken curiosity stirring in her heart would lead her to a life-changing discovery.

When Fred, Raquel, and Katherine entered Lia's grade one classroom, they were ready to share the gospel. As ShareWord Global members on a GO Trip to Peru, they had come to tell the children the Good News of Jesus.

The children were thrilled when they arrived, but they quickly settled down to listen.

Raquel spoke first, sharing the story of Jesus—how He died on the cross to forgive our sins and rose again, to give us the gift of salvation. Across the classroom, the children listened closely; their eyes locked in on Raquel.

But Lia's eyebrows scrunched together in confusion.

She stood up and walked over to Katherine.

“Did Jesus really do that?” Lia asked quietly.

“Did what?” Katherine responded.

“Died to forgive me for...what's that called again?” Lia asked, trying to remember.

Katherine gave Lia a small smile. “That's called sin. Do you know what sin is?”

Lia looked at Katherine and slowly nodded. “Yes. The woman said it's when we don't listen to God's rules.”

“That's right. Can you give me an example of that?” Katherine asked.

Lia thought for a moment. Then, with childlike honesty, she answered:

“Like when I lie...or when I don't listen to my mom.”

Katherine smiled softly. “Yes, that's exactly it.” She paused and leaned closer. “But here's the Good News: God sent His Son, Jesus, to forgive your sins and help you make good choices. When we ask Him, He makes our hearts new and helps us do better next time.”

A big smile stretched across Lia's face, her eyes widening with joy. “God must love me so much!”

Katherine's smile grew just as big as she saw Lia's happiness. “That's right. Jesus loves you very, very much.”

“And He can make my heart new too!” Lia squealed with excitement.

“What is your name?” Katherine finally asked, moved by the delight God's love had awakened in this little girl.

“Lia!”

Filled with joy, Lia hurried back to her desk as copies of Chispa (Spark) magazine were being passed around—a Scripture magazine that explores the 12 truths of God's greatest gift to humanity. She opened her copy immediately, eager to read more about the Saviour who loves her so much.

Later that day, as Raquel and Fred packed up to leave, Lia rushed over to Raquel. She was bursting with happiness about her discovery. It was clear she had been carrying the thought with her all day.

Her eyes sparkled as she exclaimed, “Jesus loves me very much! And I love Him too!”

Lia's joyful response filled the GO Trip members with heartfelt awe as they watched her delight in the truth that Jesus loved her so much that He died for her.

In that classroom, the love of God and the message of the cross reached Lia's tender heart. With wide eyes and overflowing joy, she got it—she understood it for the first time. And it was a discovery more powerful than she could have imagined.
