Under The Church Sign

Sometimes the right place and the right time look very ordinary—a dusty road, a short pause, a kind smile. On a GO Trip, these are often the moments when God is already at work. Then, in a single moment, the day changes, and you understand why you were meant to be there.

On the Kenya GO Trip, a team from Shekinah Pentecostal Church walked through the village of Kiserian alongside Bishop Charles. Their goal was simple: share the love of Jesus and offer Hope and Sparkmagazines to the people they met—one conversation at a time.

Located just outside Nairobi, Kiserian is a growing community where everyday life unfolds along dusty roads and close‑knit neighbourhoods. It's also where Christian faith is woven into daily life—spoken openly, practised freely, and shared as something familiar.

Kem, a member of the GO team from the USA, saw two nine-year-old girls by the road as they passed a church sign. Their names were Grace and Tonya. Although school was in session, they weren’t attending that day and hoped to return the next.

Something about their shy smiles made Kem stop. She waved and introduced herself, and they shared their names. In that quiet exchange, she sensed this was no coincidence—it was a moment God had planned.

The girls already knew about Jesus—as many children in Kiserian do—so together they sang “Jesus Loves Me.” Soon, a friend and a younger sibling joined them. Kem opened a Spark magazine and read John 3:16, speaking simply about God’s love. The children listened closely, their eyes bright with interest.

When it was time to keep walking, the girls followed a little behind. They watched as Kem spoke with a group of boys who passed by. The boys prayed to invite Jesus into their lives, and Kem prayed blessings over their families. Grace and Tonya stayed close, taking it all in—familiar with prayer, yet still eager to listen and learn.

After the boys left, Kem returned to the girls, hugged them, and prayed for them and their families. It was a peaceful, tender moment —one that felt small, yet deeply meaningful.

Later, Bishop Charles mentioned that he recognized Grace and knew she wasn’t attending the church’s school. That conversation stayed with Kem. She prayed harder for both girls. That they could go to school regularly and walk confidently into the future that God planned for them.

A simple walk on a dusty road in Kiserian—where faith is common and God’s name is often heard—became a reminder that God works through small moments. God used Kem, a simple song, and the message in Sparkmagazine to remind Grace and Tonya of a truth. They may have heard it before, but they needed to remember it that day.

And sometimes, that is the purpose of going—not to bring something new, but to be the messengers, carrying God’s truth into the exact moment it is needed most.

This is why we GO—to meet people where they are, share God’s love in real moments, and watch hope take root.

Moments like these are waiting to happen every day. Join a GO Trip again and open the door to experience the next story of hope.
