A Wavering Voice
In Lusaka, Zambia, Stella, a mother of two and store owner, faced pressures few could see. Her youngest child had a physical challenge bringing daily pain, and her relationship with her husband was strained. She worked hard to provide for her family, yet by day’s end, she still felt alone. Though others had shared the gospel, it never touched her life—until one afternoon when a pastor and local outreach member stopped by her shop.
When the pastor asked about her struggles, Stella’s voice wavered. “I feel like nobody cares to ask how I’m really doing,” she said. She admitted she prayed sometimes—believing God answered when more customers came but not when she begged for healing or answers about her daughter. Holding back tears with quiet strength, she confessed she’d never truly read Scripture or felt a personal relationship with God.
As they explained that this visit might be God answering her prayer, they opened a Hope magazine to Psalm 23. Stella’s face softened. “I remember this one—I love it,” she said. They read it together, explaining that God’s Word brings comfort even when life feels unfair. Her grip on her apron loosened, and light flickered in her eyes.
Gently, the pastor invited her to pray, to ask Jesus into her life. She bowed her head, and together they thanked God for His presence, asked for wisdom in raising her children, and prayed over her young daughter—that she might see her child as a unique blessing, gifted in God’s image. They encouraged Stella to look for her daughter’s talents and to trust God, even when answers don’t come quickly.
Before leaving, Stella thanked them—her voice firm with hope. She promised to join church on Sunday. The pastor gave her his number, and she shared hers, knowing he would follow up the next day.
As they walked away, Stella waved. Her smile, for the first time in what felt like forever, was genuine.
Please join this team as they continue to pray for Stella—that she’ll experience God’s family, grow in Scripture, and find the joy and purpose Christ offers.
