A Question Away
Have you ever felt like you were just one question away from falling apart—facing a hopeless situation, barely holding it together, and wondering how much more you could take?
Edna felt that way.
She was once a faithful churchgoer who called herself a Christian. But the deep marital struggles she faced—culminating in divorce while she raised four children on her own now—left her in a pit of despair. At the time, she was working as house help in Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi, doing what she could to provide for her children. Her situation led the 40-year-old woman to ask herself a painful question:
“Does God really love me?”
To her, there was no way God would allow her to go through this if He truly loved her. It seemed her ex-husband was off enjoying himself while she was left struggling.
She was bitter. She was hopeless. And she felt trapped—suffering, with no visible way out.
One afternoon, Edna accompanied a friend to a local phone repair shop—a seemingly ordinary, everyday task.
But that day would soon become far from ordinary.
While her friend was speaking with the technician, she unexpectedly struck up a conversation with a man named Mardochee—a member of a ShareWord Global local partner church, Temple De Salomon Church. Mardochee was out in the community that day as part of a Gospel Outreach team—a combined group of believers from both Malawi and Canada, coming together as one, united as the body of Christ.
Mardochee was kind and thoughtful, and somehow, their small talk soon turned into something much deeper. Before she knew it, Edna was opening up to him—about her broken marriage, her children, and the crushing loneliness that had made her question God’s love. Her voice trembled as she spoke, trying to hold herself together.
Mardochee listened without judgment. He let Edna speak without interruption, allowing her to fully express her feelings. And when he responded, he did so not with personal advice, but with Scripture. He used the Chiyembekezo (Hope) magazine—a resource filled with inspiring Scripture passages and images that beautifully reflected Edna’s culture. Each word Mardochee spoke dripped with encouragement, directly from God’s Word.
Like James 1:2–4, which reminded her that trials—though painful—can lead to spiritual growth that would not be possible without suffering. Mardochee explained how hardship can shape one's character and deepen faith. Then he shared Romans 8:38 and read aloud:
“...nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.”
He continued, sharing that although it may seem like those who live in sin are enjoying life, that pleasure is only temporary—and those who reject God will be separated from Him for eternity.
As he shared God’s Word, Edna could no longer hold back her emotions. Tears streamed down her face. It was as if, for the first time in a long while, she felt seen—not just by the kind man in front of her, but by God Himself.
When Mardochee asked if she wanted to rededicate her life to Christ, she said yes.
And right there, in that phone repair shop, Edna prayed and surrendered her heart once again.
As they parted ways, Mardochee encouraged Edna to find a church community—a place where she could continue growing in her faith and be surrounded by people who would walk with her through the journey ahead.
Her life didn't suddenly become easy. The weight of raising four children on her own is still very real. But something changed that day. She left with a renewed sense of hope and a quiet confidence that she is not forgotten—that God still sees her, still loves her, and is still with her.
Please join us in continuing to pray for Edna—that God would give her strength for each new day, provide for every need, and lead her to a church family where she can grow deeper roots in Christ.
Your prayers make a difference. Your words—your actions—matter.
Is there someone you’ve met who is just one question away from tears—like Edna?
You can be the one who listens, who comforts, and who reminds them that nothing can separate them from the love of God.
Together, we can tell the world.
